Way back when, in the late ‘90s, Terrell Owens was a star on the rise, hoping to replace an aging Jerry Rice as the 49ers’ go-to guy. On the field he was talented…enigmatic…troublesome…charismatic all in the same breath. His amazing talent was rewarded when he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
Presented is one of his game -issued jerseys from his time with the San Francisco 49ers in 2002. The 49ers followed up in 2002 with a 10–6 record and their 17th NFC West title; in this season, Owens had 100 catches for 1,300 yards and 13 touchdowns. The 49ers hosted the New York Giants in the Wild Card playoff round, and after falling behind 38–14, the 49ers erupted to 25 unanswered points; Owens had two touchdown catches and caught two 2-point conversions in the 49ers’ 39–38 win.
The front of the jersey shows white tackle twill numbers “81” on the chest, shoulders and back, with “OWENS” spelled in block lettering across rear nameplate. The labeling is present in the front tail – Reebok 48 with a year ’02 flag tag. Terrell Owens was known to wear “44” and this is a larger size. This style jersey was worn on November 25, 2002 vs. Eagles at COMM 3 PARK.
In addition, the custom tail cut is also not seen on this jersey, The interior seam tagging shows the fabric content (100% Nylon) as well as size 48. The shirt itself shows possible wear characteristics but more than likely it was not used during the game on November 25th 2002. The sleeves are not custom cut as was used during that GAME style during the 2002 year hence, deeming it game-issued vs. game-used.
Interestingly, it was an item that came directly from the famous purchase of Terrell Owen’s Storage unit as reported by TMZ. Overall, it is a great NFL collectible by itself but since it came out of the unit with the provenance of being owned by Owens it makes it that more special.
A copy of the original purchase receipt will add proof and provenance.
