1903 W & J Foot Ball Team Card Washington & Jefferson Football

By the early 1900s, “football fever” had swept through the student body of Washington & Jefferson, leading the College administration to take steps to further integrate the sport into the educational framework, including the development of a new governance structure. The new Student Athletic Committee and Faculty Athletic Committees instituted a minimum one-year residency requirement to combat transient students and created an alumni coach system, so the coaches would be more sympathetic to the educational objectives of the college.

Presented is a promotional card that showcases the W & J team on the front from 1903. The verso has advertising for Black’s Restaurant. It measures 2.75″ x 4.5″ and has a central crease. jj
