High voltage document from the early Republic. This letters patent, signed by President James Madison, Secretary of State James Monroe and Attorney General Richard Rush (son of Famed Benjamin Rush was awarded in 1815. Specifically, the instrument executed a patent to William Waring and Charles Phillips for their creation of a machine for “cutting and heading nails in one operation.” It measures about 12″ x 13 3/4″ and may have been folded twice vertically. The patent was apparently affixed to a secure surface by a uniformly applied adhesive, which is only lightly evident on the front. The official seal remains intact, but the silk embellishing ribbon is tattered. Now nearly two centuries old, the handwritten characters are quite faded yet entirely legible. The major figures grad: James Madison 3-4; James Monroe 6 and Richard Rush 6.
