The 1932 Sanella Babe Ruth card was part of a 112 sports card set depicting athletes of different sports from around the world. One card was given away with the purchase of a half pound of Sanella Margarine or a full set was made available in an album titled “Handbuch des Sports” that could be ordered through the mail. The Back of the full color graphics, thin paper stock cards were printed in German, and were attached to pages of the album. Many are found with the remnants of glue that held them to the page. The Graphics used for the Babe Ruth card was from a photo taken in 1926.
There are three types of backs for the Babe Ruth card. Type 1 – The Sanella brand name is towards the center. Type 2- The Sanella Brand name is closer to the bottom, with 4 lines of text below it. Type 3 – Is identical to type 2, but has a line of reference to the page number 83, above the words “Handbuch des Sports” towards the top. The Babe Ruth Card is one of several foreign baseball cards issued during his playing career. This one is the Type 2 version.
This Sanella Margarine card from Germany features the immortal Babe Ruth in full follow-through; a brilliantly-centered image. The borders are creamy white, and the reverse contains colloquial German in boldly struck black ink.
It is the 1932 Sanella Babe Ruth Graded Card Type 2 as showcased with the name closer to the bottom with 4 lines of text below it. It was encapsulated and graded by SGC PR 1.
